Milling aluminum with the Shapeoko 2

Postby michaeluna » Thu Nov 14, 2013 5:25 pm

Hi all. I've been running some tests on the new Shapeoko 2 and wanted to share my results. I've got a more in-depth blog post up here, but the short of it is:

-It works!
-Use some thread tape on the collet if you're using the stock spindle
-Go slow (~500mm/min)
-Step down small (~0.1mm)
-Use cutting fluid

Michael, I've already posted about your project here:

You might want to take a look since there are some questions there.

Very cool!

I went ahead and added your data to the wiki, and also added purchase links for the endmill and aluminum --- I hope no one minds.

Glad to see some hard numbers for the ShapeOko 2 --- what's the rated top speed for the rotary tool?

The wiki has 35,000 --- are those numbers still valid for the bundled tool?

Oh sweet, thanks BotDoc. Checking it out now.

I believe the rotary tool is identical to the first one, we just got them in black this time. So the numbers should be the same. One note is that the speed adjustment works by cutting the power, so you lose cutting power as you reduce the speed. It works, but it's a $10 spindle.
