Home Depot Aluminum

Postby MeanderBolt » Sat Jan 31, 2015 7:49 pm

Anyone know what grade the bars at Home Depot are? I am in the midst of my first run through aluminum on my S2. I am learning a lot (read... story coming) but I am not yet there. There is a lot of conflicting information, so I am trying to narrow the scope of the info I am buying into.

I believe the angles they carry are 6063 architectural aluminum, but that's only based on the fact that the profile has square edges, usually other grades have slightly rounded edges similar to steel angle. Don't know if that means that the bar is also 6063 or not. I have milled bar from Depot and it worked fine, I used same settings I use for 6061

Hardware store aluminium sheet is likely to be 1050, because that's the cheapest. It machines poorly, because it's very soft. Extruded profiles (angle, T) are likely 6063, because that's cheap and easy to extrude. 6063 is a little easier to machine than 1050 (pretty much anything is easier to machine than 1050), but still not good. If you buy from a specialist, you're likely to find 6082 extrusion, which machines very well, and better grades of sheet and plate too (e.g. 5083, 6082).

I just found a thread on CNC zone and I will run it passed you guys. I though it was interesting. I saw, but did not understand that the color painted on the end of the aluminum actually means something. According to the thread, you can look up the color which will indicate the grade. The end of my piece is purple which would indicate 5052. Would that make sense?

I did a second try yesterday and was met with success. Very beautiful shiny milled aluminumy success. (post with lots of pictures to come)

What's the significance of ALCLAD?

Are they trying to communicate that it and 5056 share the orange & gray colour code?

No Idea. I was asking you guys what you thought.

I just got back home and was reading more.... It looks like that is just the color codes for that one company. I looked at some other companies and while similar, many things are different, so, not to be trusted.

Even on the HD website, there is no listing as to what it is. Seems kinda suspicious, doesn't it? Like Cat was saying, probably the least common denominator.

Not sure, but I've been using Speedy Metals for years (speedymetals.com), they have a wide variety of material, no minimum order, and they'll ship. Used to work 1/2 mile away from them, which was fantastic; now I'm an hour away so the UPS guy usually does the footwork.
