The easiest approach so far is to accomodate the 20mm spacing in the z-axis extrusions. That's how the standard mounts work, and that's how I did the UHMW mounts shown in the video.

That seems pretty straight-forward. The Wolfgang's standard mount is drilled to fit four screws arranged in a 1"x1" square pattern. In this case, you just want a 20mm x 1" rectangle pattern instead. As long as there's enough clearance for the t-nuts, it should work.

I was pretty excited about the Wolfgang spindles, but I just realized that they don't handle 1/4" shank bits. 1/8" is too restrictive for my needs, and anyone thinking about these should be aware of the limitations imposed by the limit. For instance, there's doesn't appear to be much in the way of surfacing cutters (fly/face mills) in the 1/8" size.

1/4" is pretty limiting as well, but at least there's more than 1/8" or 3/16".

Just as a heads up: My cnconabudget.com spindle is the old fixed bore variety! I should have ordered the ER11 version, but opted instead for the fixed bore... still not sure why I did that.

Ah, yeah I would definitely go with the ER-11 version.

My Wolfgang Engineering TB-650 is in the mail on its way to me complete with a custom mounting plate to fit the makerslide rail. Will post a trip report once it's arrived

I've bought a DC spindle similar to the one Edward linked. I have created a 20mm motor mount that I have not tested (as I am waiting for my shapeoko for after the summer).

Motor is quiet and powerful. I bought it on eBay for $75.

I'll try to take some photos of it mounted to my frame tomorrow when i'm at the hackerspace. I've got almost all of the parts to control it now, just have been busy with other more important projects (Like moving the hackerspace to new digs).
