Electro-magnetic interference from spindle ??

Postby roberlin » Sat Sep 01, 2012 11:18 pm

So, I've had this recurring problem where my shapeoko would just stop in the middle of a file.
It has gotten more frequent recently, to the point where I can't actually mill anything anymore.

After a lot of time testing today it seems to happen if and only if my spindle (a Proxxon) is on.
And the spindle is just plugged into the wall -- no direct connection to my controller (a tinyg).

Is it a realistic possibility that I'm getting some kind of weird radio interference from the spindle?
I didn't use shielded wire for the steppers, and there is no shielding around the tinyg.

I think I will get out the aluminum foil tomorrow. Maybe I'm just going nuts.

Is it possible you have a short somewhere in your electronics? This sounds exactly like a problem that started happening to me the other day and ended up being some aluminum shavings causing a short: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=715

The short didn't happen when I had my spindle off, my guess is the vibration was part of my problem.

The short seems a lot more likely than my various theories. Especially since I was messing with aluminum about a week ago. I did give it a once-over with the shop-vac earlier today, but I will try something more thorough.

It could be just vibration, making a loose connection worse. And it would be consistent with things getting progressively worse in time.

Blew the board out thoroughly with compressed air. Still had the problem.
Going with the vibration theory, I started disconnecting the shapeoko stepper by stepper looking for a loose connection. Wound up with the tinyg on the floor next to the shapeoko table, totally disconnected from the shapeoko and still experiencing the issue. :-)

Then Alden and Riley at Synthetos suggested I put the proxxon on a separate A.C. circuit from the tinyg and computer. This seems to have fixed it!

Now I've got it back on the same circuit (for practical reasons) with ferrite chokes on the proxxon power cable and the u.s.b. cable and it seems to be 90% fixed (I am getting a fail once on every three runs).
