Stepper motors

Time to start picking out parts.

I came across these and was curious what people thought about them for the X & Y axis; both are NEMA 23, bipolar and the same manufacturer as the Sparkfun ones I believe.

NEMA 23 .9 degree 125oz in 1.7A 580g $22.35

NEMA 23 1.8 degrees 173.6oz in 2.2A 916g $31.05

I'm still not sure which driver board to go with, thinking about theTinyG, but I think 2.5A is a safe limit.

Those steppers look nice. in fact, the site looks pretty nice too. I'd never seen or heard of that company before. I have them bookmarked now.

Regarding your motor choices, I'd stick with the 125oz/in model. I'm not sure if the gantry, unmodified, will hold up to more torque than that from just one side.

I think you're right, those are the same brand as the Sparkfun nema23s. From my experience, those are nice motors and will perform as advertised. I just went in for 2 to test with

Yeah, I stumbled across that site after following a few links.

I plan on trying steppers on both sides of the gantry to balance things out and eventually extend both axes; once I get things running well and feel confident tinkering. *grin* Of course I have plenty of time to get busy and wait.

Hi Edward,

Is the Z-axis capable of mounting a NEMA 23 too? I'm wondering if I should leave the Z as a NEMA 17 and just go NEMA 23 on the X/Y (luckily I hadn't ordered motors yet -- so I think I'll get the Phidgets NEMA 23s!).

I think you'd have to redesign the Z-axis mount to put in a NEMA 23.

Would probably be overkill though?

@sea2starts is correct, you could mount a nema23 to the Z-axis if you designed a new mount. But, the standard mount only accepts nema17 form factor motors.

I ordered two NEMA 17s and three NEMA 23s, so I'll report back when I get them!

My motors arrived from Phidgets. They appear to be good quality. I got the 0.9 degree NEMA 23s and the 1.8 degree NEMA 17s as I didn't feel the extra resolution on the Z-axis was compelling.

Will post more when I've tested them!

I noticed that NEMA 23's seem to be mostly 6.35mm drive shaft vs the NEMA 17's 5mm.

And the default pulley in the shapeoko parts list is 5mm bore.

So, to use the NEMA 23, does one drill out the pulley. Or order a different one?
Or is it a nonissue for some reason?
