Dewalt DW660 vs Makita 3706

Dewalt DW660 vs Makita 3706

Postby sea2stars » Wed May 16, 2012 2:41 pm

I'm trying to figure out the price difference between the Dewalt DW660 and the Makita 3706.

I'm leaning toward the Makita down the road because you can purchase the vacuum dust shield that comes with the more expensive kit separately for about $13; part number 193455-7.

Then again it may be a fun exercise to design one for the Dewalt, throw it at Autodesk 123D Make, cut out the parts in plastic, glue them together and mount. I haven't had a chance to play with the software yet, but does anybody know if you can set the desired material layer thickness?

Looks like the Makita is a hair faster at 32k RPM vs the 30k RPM of the DW660. Weight seems to be a push and the size is virtually identical. I'm guessing it'll perform at least as well as the DW660. I've had a Makita cordless drill/driver for about 8 years (18v model) and it's still spinning. Can't say anything bad about their quality at this point.

The vacuum attachments looks pretty slick, and for $13 it would be a lot easier than designing one from scratch for the DW660. I'm planning to model one up for the DW660 and print it on my ORDbot, once I get that thing assembled...

You'll probably be pleased with either choice. They're both name brand and they look to be quite the same in terms of performance. Keep us updated on your decision!

I was looking at the Makita too. I like the idea of the dust collector from the manufaturer. I also like the fact that I can use both 1/8 and 1/4 bits.
Anyone out here have anything to input that would make me rethink my choice.

BTW the router I was going to use is just way too heavy (Dewalt DWP611)

My main concerns are noise, running for extended periods of time, and issues using something that "powerful" on Makerslide.
