What about this motor: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... unner.html 36V, 2200W for $36. 6mm shaft. They also sell a rpm sensor, that I might be able to connect to linuxcnc, to do closed loop speed control.

Actually thinking about this, the problem will be with the power supply. I will cost too much to provide that much power. So I think this idea will only work for small spindles.

Power supply issues are a problem. Luckily, I have a 12V (actually 13.6V) 40A supply from long ago. Maybe putting a marine deep cycle battery parallel will allow it to handle the surges.

This is quickly getting into the price range of: http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/52 ... alers.html

How's everyone going with this idea? Anyone made any progress? I've been looking around, hobbyking seems a great place to grab some decent watercooled motors and a cheap esc to suit and you can pick up 12V 30A power supplies off ebay for about $30. So it seems like a cheap little idea for a quiet alternative to a dremel.......plus so much smaller! I'm tempted to grab some parts and just go for it but if i could I'd like to learn from other peoples mistakes and observations first :P

My shapeoko is in the mail. I plan on building my own spindle. I am a machinist by trade and have an addiction to rc cars so I already have all the parts. I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

I am in progress of building one brushless spindle.
Here it is the first DYI parts.. will host an ER 11 collet and an approximately 300w brushless motor.
I hope to be more quiet than the dremel because I use it inside my apartment.

Please do document this - I have a DW660 at the moment, but eventually that will die and the more options for spindles the better!
ShapeOko #??? - Double X, 500mm expanded Y, drive shaft, belts outside, alternate belt routing (tilted Z shape)
